About Modern Mouse

Modern Mouse gift boutique in the Alameda Towne Centre is a place for shoppers to discover a fresh and exciting collection of locally and independently designed goodness — home accessories, personal accessories and special occasion gifts — made to delight and inspire.

Our mission is to provide shoppers with an open, friendly and inviting space where they can find the perfect gift for themselves or their special recipient; and to promote the work of talented designers in a productive and nurturing venue.

The layout of the store will be pleasing to the senses – clean, uncluttered and laid out to foster a sense of discovery as shoppers embark on their gift-seeking journey.

Modern Mouse is currently seeking to partner with San Francisco Bay Area and other independent designers who create well-made, unique products with a stylish and modern appeal. Please see our Collaborate page for more information.

a.k.a. “eleen”

Modern Mouse owner Eleen Hsu is an Alameda resident who, prior to opening the store, ran a self-titled online business where she sold handmade bags, pouches and pillows at http://eleen.etsy.com, as well as in local Bay Area craft fairs including Bazaar Bizarre and Renegade Craft Fair. She now focuses her time and energy on making Modern Mouse a great place for customers to shop and artists to sell; and helping out with the launch of Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh’s Delivering Happiness book, coming out in June 2010!

Prior to pursuing her design enterprise, Eleen spent 13 years in the field of professional services. After graduating from UC Berkeley with an undergraduate degree in Business Administration, she started out as a financial auditor and information systems consultant with Ernst and Young LLP. In 2000, Eleen moved into the internet industry, where she spent the next ten years in project management. In that role, she led cross-functional teams of designers, developers and quality assurance testers in full-scale web development projects as well as web marketing and design initiatives for high-profile clients like Orbitz, Screen Actors Guild, Toyota and Häagen-Dazs.

Eleen’s career path has equipped her with the fundamentals for creating a successful business of her own. She has gained valuable planning, administrative and client service skills, learned how to work with diverse personalities and perhaps most importantly, become skilled at being resourceful and adaptable. She feels lucky to live in the city of Alameda with her wonderful and supportive, super-star husband Jimmy Agustin, from whom she got the nickname “Mouse”.
